Zhejiang Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology was established in 1979 and is a public welfare institution under Zhejiang Provincial Department of Culture with leading roles of divisions or equivalents. The current director is Liu Bin.

The main functions of the Institute are to take charge of the archaeological survey, exploration, excavation, protection, research, consultation and evaluation, planning and monitoring, and related business training of cultural relic resources in Zhejiang Province. There are 4 functional departments (Administrative Office, Finance Department, Security Department and Library Information Center), 7 business departments (Prehistoric Archaeology Room, Shang and Zhou Archaeological Room, Han, Tang, Song and Yuan Archaeological Room, Science and Technology Archaeology Room, Underwater Archaeological Center, Cultural Protection Room, and Cultural Heritage Monitoring Room) and 7 archaeological workstations in the Institute (Zhejiang Paleolithic Archaeological Workstation, Zhejiang Archeological and Cultural Relics Protection Xiaoshan Base, Hemudu Workstation, Liangzhu Workstation, Anji Ancient City Workstation, Shanglin Lake Workstation, Wujiabu Workstation). In 2014, the Institute was awarded with the title the Zhejiang World Cultural Heritage Monitoring Center with the same working staff.

As of the end of 2017, there are totally 63 staff within the verified system, 59 working staff, including 28 senior researchers, 9 deputy senior researchers and 9 assistant researchers; 46 of them have a bachelor degree or above. One of the staff is awarded with the title of Advanced Worker of National Cultural Relic System, one awarded with the title of Young and Middle-aged Expert with Outstanding Contribution of Zhejiang, one awarded with the title of Most Beautiful Zhejiang People- Proud Figures of 2017, one awarded with the government special allowance of State Council, and one listed into the third batch state “10,000 plan” Philosophy and Social Science Leading Talents. In 2009, the Institute was selected by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security and the Ministry of Culture as the “Advanced Group of the National Cultural System”.
